An Epiphany prayer

The God Article's Sunday Morning Prayer

Good and gracious God,

It only takes a few minutes
of looking around
at this sometimes broken world,
to realized
that we aren't very good
at including
other people.

We certainly seem to be able
to include new people
in most of the things we do.
Just not different people.
It is as if diversity
scares us.

God of Creation,
remind us
that you created
the width,
the breadth,
the depths
and the heights
of this diverse world
which surrounds us.
Remind us that all of it
is a reflection of you,
its Creator,
and that if we ever hope to know
the fullness of you,
if we ever hope to celebrate
the glories of your presence,
we must learn
to celebrate
the diversity you created
and to surround ourselves
in the glorious eclecticness
of your creation
and the people
who live
in it.

In the times that we do not,
inspire us toward creating
not just a better world
but toward creating
a better us.

Give us courage to celebrate
the things that are not like us
and wisdom to see how embracing them
necessarily expands who we are,
in ways which make us
a fuller reflection of you.

Amen.

Statins show promise for malaria treatment?

Pictures of our completed project have not yet arrived, but this bit of science news was interesting.

Seems lovastatin (aka Mevacor, a commonly prescribed med in the US for lowering our cholesterol ) may hold some hope when added to traditional treatement for malaria.  In mice anyway, lovastatin was noted to minimize the cognitive after-effects of cerebral malaria.  Human studies yet to follow.

Lastly, this poem posted today by Parker Palmer on his FB page I thought was beautiful as we approach the end of calendar year 2012.  It might even capture the sentiment of a person who's traveled to Sierra Leone!

Project news....

This note from Santos was in my “inbox” this a.m.

sorry for late responds, due to lazyness to go to the cafe.but all the same the walkway has finished since last week. patient, Church members, and other people are so impressed about the job. so we fell proud about it .  thanks and God Bless you for funding the project.
   but no baby yet from Kadie and by the Grace of God I will be going to the village to see my old Mum. but I will write you when I come back.
  with Love Santos

Thanks, all, who contributed funds for this project.  In addition to what you did for “patient, Church members, and other people,” you helped a group of men who work very hard (and have very little to show for it) feel proud….

You've Got Mail!!

Merry Christmas from your UMC Kissy Family
Christmas season is the perfect time to show friends, family, brethren in Christ and those around you how much you appreciate them. Thus, as we come to the end of another year, I want, on behalf of the UMC General Hospital, Kissy, Freetown, Sierra Leone, to thank all of you who have contributed to our success in the past. You have touched and made an indelible difference in so many lives through our healing ministry at Kissy.  We therefore wish you all the blessings that come with the birth of Christ and may peace,joy and laughter fill your Christmas season and new year.  This comes with blessings and love from all of us at Kissy. Thank you.

The awe and the awful....

From Dr. Marke, Chief Medical Officer at Kissy Hospital, about "our" recent project....

The walkway project is progressing very well. They will finish roofing today. Painting started today and overall the beauty that the project adds to the facility is simply eye catching. From what I hear even the church members are impressed with it. Thanks to all of you that had it happen. God bless you.

Lord, have mercy...

Who will stand for what is right, just, fair? Who in that country, region, city, church will serve his/her neighbor before him/herself.

Masked and shielded with more resources and opportunity than our brothers and sisters, sons and daughters in Sierra Leone (and elsewhere), we know this is our question as well.

To a broken world, you came/come; you spoke/speak; you did/do.

In this world, in our time, we......

A different nativity story....

If you have done any work with those living in poverty (whether in Africa, the US, or elsewhere), you may want to take a look at this blog post from United Methodeviations, entitled "Manipunativity," 12/16/12.

Be aware, it is not sugar-coated.  But as we think of the magnitude of the incarnation in different cultures or economic systems....well, read on....

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
